Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (5-0) won their Home Opener on Monday night over the visiting Savannah Sand Gnats (1-4), 10-0. Starter Robert Grace recorded the win tossing five hitless innings allowing just one walk and Brett Pill drove in four runs including a three-run homer.
Augusta scored two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Henry Gutierrez connected for an RBI sacrifice fly to score Tyler Graham for a 1-0 lead. Brett Pill followed with an RBI single scoring Brian Bocock to put Augusta up by two.
The GreenJackets busted the game open in the second inning plating six runs on five hits highlighted by a three run homer by Pill, his first of the year.
Grace (1-0) started the game retiring the first seven batters in a row and did not allow a hit over his five innings of work. The right-hander also walked one and struck out six.
Kevin Pucetas pitched scoreless four innings in relief for the save allowing just four hits, no walks and striking out six.
Gutierrez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Graham, Bocock, Ryan Rohlinger and Marcus Sander each collected an RBI as well.
The GreenJackets and Sand Gnats will play game two of their four game series on Tuesday night with Augusta sending right-hander Adam Cowart (1-0, 1.80) to the hill. Savannah will counter with right-hander Tobi Stoner (0-0, 2.25). Game time is at 7:05 p.m.
Monday night was the GreenJackets first shutout of the season.
The GreenJackets connected for 13 hits in the game, the most so far in 2007.
Brett Pill’s four RBI’s is the most by GreenJackets player in a single game in 2007. Pills home run was also the GreenJackets first of the season.
Augusta has outscored their opponents in the first five games 28-4
Grace and Pucetas combined for 12 strikeouts; the most this season by Augusta’s pitching staff.
