Evans man races past the competition

March 27, 2007

With the arrival of spring, area racetracks have once again roared to life. For one Evans man, victory lane has become a familiar stomping ground.

Meet the gambler. No, not Kenny Rogers. This gambler is super late model driver Ed Basey. Betting on him to win a race, the odds are in your favor.

It was about 25 years ago he and his brother took a gamble on racing.

"My oldest brother looked at me and said, 'Edward, I'll build the car if you build the motor.' And that's pretty much how we got started," Basey said.

Basey usually runs the Carolina Clash Series here in the southeast. In 2002 he won the Clash title. While there's other nationwide series, Basey's content running right where he is, which includes Gordon Park Speedway.

"I reckon if we were younger now, we would probably go for the national series, travel the countryside and do nothing but racing...but at this point in my life I'm pretty happy where I am now, running the regional series."

There still may come a day where the Basey family slips the car in the trailer and heads to Ohio and one of the most famous dirt tracks in the nation.

"I've always said I want to go to El Doro one day and run 'The Dream'. It may still happen, who knows," Basey said. "If the opportunity comes we may go this year, but that would be like a vacation thing with us."

Even if he never runs El Doro, this gambler is still enjoying the roll of the dice.

"Am I still having fun? I believe so. I really do enjoy it. Everybody that helps us enjoys it, so yes, I'm still having fun."

This past weekend, Basey pocketed four grand for winning the clash series race at Gordon Park Speedway.
