AUGUSTA---Today Mayor Deke Copenhaver donated $500 to the Augusta Boxing Club in honor of former boxing champion and Augusta native Vernon Forrest.

The money will sponsor Laney Walker senior DeMarcus Booker, who wants to be a boxer.

Forrest was shot and killed in July in Atlanta during an armed robbery.

Today his family was at the Augusta Commission chambers as the mayor announced DeMarcus as the scholarship recipient.

Vernon's brother LaVert told us that this scholarship is very important for his family.

"He's a hometown product of Augusta. He reminds us of Vernon Forrest, and he's a boxer, and I think he's gonna make Augusta proud, just like Vernon made Augusta proud."

DeMarcus Booker said he was very excited about this opportunity.

"I'm very proud I'm going to keep going and I'm not going to stop. I'm just determined, I'm just going to try to be the best"

Mayor Deke Copenhaver said that Forrest was an inspiration to the whole community, and that he is happy to give back to the Augusta Boxing Club.
