They say records are meant to be broken. Well, that's a good thing because at Greenbrier High School, the record for the best start in girls volleyball is now history, thanks to the 17-0 start by this year's Lady Wolfpack.
"It's awesome. We've done great," said senior Jordan Welch. "It's just a really big deal to make it this far and do so well."
If you're looking for a reason for why this team is so good, look no further than their seniors. There are nine of them on a roster of 12.
"Well, I enjoy the leadership because it's less work for me," said head coach Debbie Born. "With us having seniors, it takes some of that burden away from me."
"It's really important, not only for leadership, but because we've been playing together for so long," said senior Ellie Bruni. "We've been playing together for 7 years basically with club and school."
As of today, the team stands at 18 and 1, after suffering their first loss of the season last weekend. But instead of letting that loss bring them down, they're letting it serve as motivation
"I think we were a little bit nervous so now we know what we need to do differently to get better, especially as we go to state and region," said Bruni.
"I think a little humility is sometimes good," said Born. "I don't think it's always good to be undefeated so it's a learning lesson. Hopefully, they've learned from it. We'l find out real quick."
That's because the Lady Wolfpack face Aiken and Lakeside this week. Two tough opponents for a team with hopes of making school history.
"The first state championship team? That would be absolutely amazing," said senior Nicole Burdette. "I definitely think this will be the team to do it though."
