NEW YORK (AP) -- Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik could begin punching in a few weeks, after his defense against Paul Williams was postponed because of a staph infection on his hand.
Pavlik promoter Top Rank said Thursday that the WBO and WBC titleholder will be able to start hitting with his injured left hand the first week of October.
They're hopeful that the fight will take place Dec. 5 at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
Williams promoter Dan Goossen said that he received a medical report on Wednesday that showed Pavlik's staph infection clearing up. While there are still issues to be resolved, Goossen said he's confident they won't stand in the way of the fight.
