Report says Bonds failed test for amphetamines

NEW YORK (AP) -- A published report says Barry Bonds failed a test for amphetamines last season and originally blamed it on a teammate.

The New York Daily News cites several unnamed sources.

The newspaper reports that when the San Francisco Giants outfielder was first told about the positive test, he attributed it to a substance he had taken from the locker of a teammate, Mark Sweeney.

Sweeney's agent says his client never gave Bonds any illegal substances.

Bonds has always maintained that he never tested positive for illegal drugs. He's under investigation for lying to a grand jury about steroid use.

His agent has declined to comment on the Daily News report.

Bonds is just 22 home runs shy of passing Hank Aaron's career record of 755.
