Augusta, GA – Augusta GreenJackets infielder/outfielder Juan Perez has accepted an invitation to compete in the Home Run Derby, prior to the 2009 South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Charleston, WV on Tuesday.

With five home runs this season, Perez will join a talented field that will compete for prizes both individually and as team with his fellow Southern Division participants. Charleston’s Melky Mesa, Asheville’s Jordan Pacheco and Savannah’s Sean Ratliff will represent the South while the Northern Division participants are expected to be Greensboro’s Ben Lasater, Hickory’s Mike Bianucci, Hagerstown’s Derek Norris and Calvin Anderson, representing the host West Virginia Power.

The winning division after the first round of the derby will receive a gourmet dinner after Tuesday’s game at the Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Resort in Charleston. The top three overall home run hitters, regardless of division, will compete in the final round with the winner receiving a prize package consisting of an iPod, noise canceling headphones, a portable DVD player and more.

Perez, tied for the team lead in home runs with Josh Mazzola, will be the lone GreenJackets on-field representative at the All-Star Game next week. Daniel Runzler was also selected to attend but will miss the festivities due to his promotion to San Jose in the California League two weeks ago. In addition to Perez, trainer LJ Petra will represent the GreenJackets.
