NEWNAN, Ga. - Three-time past champion Laura Coble of Augusta fired a 4-over-par 76 to take a one-shot lead over Ashley Medders of Alma after the first round of the 40th annual Greater Atlanta Women's Amateur Championship, taking place at Newnan Country Club, May 18-20. Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island and Alei Mitchell of Waycross currently share third place at 79.
Kaley Branton of Cartersville, Julie Criss of St. Simons Island and 12-year-old Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell are tied for fifth place at 80. Three players round out the top 10 at 10-over 82, including teenager Amira Alexander of Alpharetta and a pair of past champions, Brenda Pictor of Marietta and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain. Both Spinucci, who won the Greater Atlanta in 1988 and '90, and Pictor, who captured the title in 1995, are also past GSGA Senior Women's Champions.
Coble cardied one birdie on the day, at the 363-yard 16th, to go with three bogeys and one double-bogey at the 316-yard 11th. Medders tallied five bogeys during the round for her 77. Coble, who won this Championship in 2002, '04 and '05, led Medders by one stroke at the turn with a 1-over 37 and held on to that margin over the back nine.
Davis also made the turn at 1-over with a birdie and two bogeys, but six bogeys on the back nine resulted in her opening-round 79. Mitchell, who plays golf at UNC Wilmington, had three bogeys on the front and four on the back to match Davis.
