Augusta, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets are one of the hottest teams in the South Atlantic League. After losing 11 of their first 13 games, the Jackets have now won four of their last five with a convincing 9-5 win over the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium on Monday night.
The Jackets got on the board in the second with the first of Mike Loberg’s three RBI singles. Rome tied things in the bottom of the inning with an RBI hit by Joel Campusano, but Augusta got the lead back with Josh Mazzola’s third inning RBI single. Loberg’s second run-scoring hit stretched the lead again in the fourth..
Stephen Shults greeted Aaron King with a solo home run in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game but that’s as close as it got. King (1-0) pitching on his 20th birthday picked up his first South Atlantic League win with a solid five-inning outing, striking out three and walking one while allowing six hits and two runs – one earned.
Augusta added to their lead in the fifth when CJ Ziegler plated one with an RBI double. Ziegler would come around to score on a passed ball. In the seventh, Loberg knocked in a third run and James Simmons joined the hit parade, driving in a pair on a triple to right centerfield.
The Braves threatened to get back into things off Andrew Reichard in the seventh. With two outs, Luis Sumoza hit a three-run, opposite field home run to put the Braves back to within three. The GreenJackets added insurance in the eighth on Charlie Culberson’s RBI single – Culberson’s second hit of the night and his second multi-hit game in a row.
