Behind good pitching and timely power hitting, the Savannah Sand Gnats swept the Augusta GreenJackets in the finale of a four-game set at Lake Olmstead Stadium by a 5-1 score Sunday afternoon. All seven of Savannah's wins in 2009 have come against the GreenJackets.

The Gnats jumped out to a lead in the third inning off Augusta starter Mike Loree (1-1) with three straight two-out singles, the last of which coming off the bat of Sean Ratliff to score Jefry Marte. Savannah added two more with two fourth-inning blasts off Loree - a home run over the left field fence on the second pitch of the fourth and another to deep right center on the very next pitch by Rafael Fernandez to extend the lead to three.

After Jordany Valdespin added another in the sixth on an infield single, the GreenJackets struck back in the bottom of the frame. Matt Klimas led off with a single and advanced to second on a balk. After reaching third on a groundout, Klimas scored on a wild pitch from reliever Kyle Allen to dent the scoreboard for Augusta.

That would be all the scoring for the GreenJackets as starter Eric Beaulac combined with Allen on a masterful performance. Beaulac (1-0) yielded just two hits in five scoreless innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Allen tossed four more solid innings of one-run baseball, allowing just two hits with three walks and five strikeouts, earning his first save.

Loree takes his first loss of the season after allowing four runs - three earned - in 5.2 innings on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
