CARROLLTON, Ga. – Two-time defending champion Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale and Augusta’s Laura Coble won two matches each on Thursday and advanced to the final match at the Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship, taking place at Sunset Hills Country Club, April 15-17. Coble, who has six-career victories at the Women’s Match Play, upended former University of Arkansas women’s golfer Ashley Medders of Alma in her quarterfinal match, 4 and 3, then dispatched fellow Augustan Taylor Ramsey, 3 and 1, in the semifinals. Top-seeded Stackhouse opened the day with a 2-up victory over Alpharetta’s Amira Alexander before ousting Augusta’s Ashlan Ramsey, 5 and 4.
Stackhouse, 15, is the reigning Georgia Women’s Amateur Champion as well as the reigning Georgia Girls’ Champion. She was also named the GSGA’s 2008 Girls’ and Women’s Player of the Year.
Coble makes her first appearance in the finals of the Georgia Women’s Match Play since winning the title in 2005. Her other five victories in the event came in 1999 and 2001-2004.
“It really feels great to be back in the final match,” Coble said. “I’m excited to play [Stackhouse] because she is one of the best players out there. It should be a great match.”
Corrie Christensen of Norcross, the Championship flight’s No. 16 seed, and Augusta’s Mary Helen McElreath, the 15 seed, will meet in the Championship Consolation final match. Christensen knocked off reigning GSGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year, Brenda Pictor of Marietta after 19 holes before defeating Perry’s Mary Riley, 1up. McElreath posted a 6 and 5 victory over Isabella Skinner of Cumming and a 1-up win over Lee Burton of St. Simons Island.
