Gerald Barnes is the winningest coach in Georgia state history. In fact, he's been coaching baseball at Westside since 1976. Today, in the midst of his 34th on the bench, Barnes earned career win 700 with Westside's 11-1 win over Cross Creek.
The Patriots were down 1-0 after one inning but the team bounced back, scoring two in the second inning to take the lead. They added six more runs in the third inning to blow the game wide open. The Patriots added three more runs in the next two innings and with the mercy rule in effect, the Patriots gave coach Barnes the 700th win of his career. So how does one achieve such a remarkable number of victories?
"You gotta be old", said Barnes. "That's kind of where I'm at. I've been blessed to be in a good place, have good players, guys that helped me coach have done a good job and just longevity really."
Coach Barnes will go for win #701 on Wednesday when the Patriots host Hephzibah.
