AUGUSTA,GA--A year ago the Aquinas Fighting Irish learned a tough less on the basketball court. You see they lost in the first round of the region tournament meaning there would be no trip to states. This year, they used that motivation to get back to the big dance on the high school front.
Now the Irish are gearing up for their first round game against Savannah County Day on the road Saturday. This year's Aquinas team is vastly different from a year ago, namely, experience. Two sophomores, one junior and a couple of seniors make up the starting five, and these kids have talent.
"The focus I think is a little better with this team" said coach Bernie Norris "Like I said, I didn't have a whole lot of talent in years before, but those kids played hard and they were loke the building block of what we have now."
"We have more people who've played more time and more game time experience" added senior Dominque Murray "We're able to play and see how the flow of the game goes and how this region is like. So on any given day we can have anybody come off the bench and just come out and score and play and win games."
To that point comes the other difference from a year ago, they believe in each other and play as a team more so then ever. Part of that is the ability of everyone on the roster to have a big night in the scoring column.
"We are, actually all five of our starters actually average over double figures every game so it's more of a team effort more then normal" said Josh Brown
Aquinas actually went undefeated in the region during the regular season, but was beaten in the 2nd round of the post season tourney. They're hoping a few more wins are still in the works.
