Jags Split With Lander, Men Win, Women Lose

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Seventh-ranked Augusta State outscored and limited Lander to 32 percent shooting and picked up a 78-60 Peach Belt Conference road win Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

The victory lifted the PBC-leading Jaguars to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the league and extended the program’s best start since 1977-78. Lander fell to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Junior forward Fred Brathwaite matched his career high with 20 points and nine rebounds, Ben Madgen had 17 points and five assists, senior center Garret Siler scored 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting, and Daniel Dixon hit three key 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 14 points.

Houston Wright paced the Bearcats with 18 points, Greg Smalls scored 11 points, and Brenton Harris added 10 points. Wright and Smalls led the team with seven rebounds apiece.

Lander started out firing from behind the arc as Wright nailed two 3-pointers while Dane Sparrow and Smalls had one apiece to help the hosts build a 14-9 lead. Harris followed with a dunk off Ford “Scooter” Lawrence’s steal and pass for a 16-9 Bearcat advantage.

Kip Kelley hit Lander’s fifth 3-pointer of the night for a 21-16 lead. But Siler scored from close range and Dixon hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 21 at the 7:37 mark. Tye Beal and Madgen followed with 3-pointers while Siler added three free throws to put the Jaguars on top, 30-23, with 4:31 to go.

The Bearcats fought back with Harris scoring twice on offensive rebound put-backs and Jacob Davis hitting a 3-pointer to slice Lander’s deficit to 35-32. Augusta scored the final five points of the first half with Jason Killeen’s inside basket giving the visitors a 40-32 lead at the break.

While Siler scored Augusta’s first five points of the second half with an inside basket and 3-point play, Lander’s Wright countered with a pair of 3-pointers as the hosts continued to trail 47-40. Brathwaite’s three-point play gave the Jaguars their first double-digit lead at 50-40 with 15:55 left.

In the women's game, Shannon McKever paced Lander to a 100-78 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State Wednesday night at Finis Horne Arena.

With the win, Lander improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the PBC while the Lady Jaguars dropped to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the league.

ASU’s Nicole Mealing led all scorers with 20 points, while Jasmine Godwin added 14 points, and Asha Gwynn, Brittany Jarrard and Tracey Paschal chipped in 10 points apiece. Eboni Davis and Paschal dished out five assists each.

McKever scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half while Kaylyn Small scored all 13 of her points in the second half. Brianna Webb added 17 points for the Lady Bearcats while TaSheba Butler scored 14 and Ciara Lyons 12.

Lander led 56-32 at the half behind 69 percent shooting from the floor, making 25-of-36 shots, including four of seven from behind the 3-point arc. McKever (7-for-8) and Webb (5-for-6) were a combined 12-of-14 in the first half.

The Lady Bearcats took control of the game early after watching an 11-2 lead shrink to 15-12. Lander scored 12 unanswered points with McKever scoring three times to build a 27-12 lead at the 10:17 mark.

ASU got within 10 points, 31-21, when Mealing hit two free throws with 6:26 left. After Mealing’s trey pulled the Jaguars within 39-26, Lander scored 11 unanswered points to lead 50-26 with 1:49 left in the half. The hosts led by 24 at the break.
