Undated--The South Carolina Chapter of the United States Tennis Association has awarded the City of Aiken the 2009 and 2010 Adult 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5 Men and Women’s State Tennis Championships. The first of the two year bid will begin May 16-18, 2009 and will be headquartered at the H.O. Weeks Tennis Center in Aiken. USTA South Carolina is a state branch of the U.S. Tennis Association.
This is the first time the City of Aiken has hosted a state tennis tournament. The completion of the new tennis pro shop and the expansion of the courts at the Weeks Tennis Center were crucial factors in Aiken being selected for this prestigious event. This event has the potential to bring 700-800 players plus spouses into Aiken over the three day weekend. The PRT staff, lead by Tennis Supervisor Mark Calvert and Athletic Superintendent Jeff Metz, will work hand in hand with USTA State League Director Mary Goins to operate the event.
The tournament will require that courts be used at the Weeks Center, Woodside Plantation, the Reserve at Woodside and possibly other locations around Aiken. The PRT staff has negotiated with other area tennis clubs to ensure that they will be enough courts to hold this first time event in Aiken.
