Asheville, NC – The Augusta GreenJackets (2-0) swept the Asheville Tourists (0-2) in the South Atlantic League Southern Divisional Series with a 4-2 win on Friday night. Starter Scott Barnes recorded the win while Andrew Davis drove in two runs and Nick Noonan had a solo homer.
Augusta took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning breaking the scoreless tie. With the bases loaded and one out Andrew Davis came through with a two-run single to right-field off the 42 foot high wall. Garrett Baker would then come in to score on a wild pitch with two outs for a 3-0 lead.
Barnes (1-0) allowed just one hit over seven innings while walking three and striking out seven. Augusta pushed the lead to 4-0 in the eighth inning on a lead off homer from Nick Noonan.
The Tourists got two unearned runs in the eighth inning off of reliever Ryan Paul to cut the lead in half but that was all Asheville would get.
Shortstop Juan Ciriaco booted a ball with two outs on a ground ball allowing one run to score then Michael Mitchell followed with an RBI single to trim the lead in half.
Andrew De La Garza worked a perfect 1.1 innings striking out two for his second save in the postseason.
The GreenJackets will open the 2008 SAL Championship Series in Augusta, GA against either the West Virginia Power or Lake County Captains. The GreenJackets will host Game 1 and Game 2 of the Championship Series on Monday September 8 and Tuesday September 9 with both games starting at 7:05 p.m.
