It's that time of year again. The first football practice of the year kicking off early this morning and you can bet every player and coach is excited to hit the field.

"I couldn't sleep last night", said Evans head coach Marty Jackson. "I was up at 3 a.m., 4 a.m., and then 5 a.m. so I finally just got up at 5:30am."

"Intensity. I almost went to sleep with my cleats on," said ARC junior Jarrad Quarles. 'It was big."

Every player and coach has waited for this since the last loss. The beginning of a new season and new oppotunities.

"Well, we have been working for this day since being knocked out last November," said Silver Bluff coach Al Lowin. "The kids have worked hard all summer and all spring. A lot of lifting weights and running so we are really excited for today."

The first practice can be tough for some.

"If you're not in shape, it is. we've spent the last couple months in the weight room, doing some speed and agility stuff," said Curtis Baptist coach Nathan Duffie. "When the sun hits practice at 7 a.m. in the morning, that when you can separate who is going to be there for the next three months."

It also can be the foundation for the season to come.

"We just try to start slow," said Lowin. "We don't try to run a thousand plays the first day. We're going to work on blocking, tackling and the fundamentals. So we're going to take it one step at a time."

So with one practice down, what's been the best thing so far?

"It's been the weather," said Aiken coach Carey Johnson. "We've been real blessed this morning. It's been cool and overcast and we hope it stays that way."
