SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Four days and 72 holes are not enough to decide
the 108th U.S. Open. World number-1 Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate will play an 18-hole playoff tomorrow at Torrey Pines to decide the
second major of the golf season.
Woods rolled in a birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force the
playoff. Woods gave his trademark fist pump and celebrated with
caddie Steve Williams following the clutch putt.
Woods is trying for his 14th career major and third U.S. Open
title. Mediate has never won a major but says anything is possible.
Woods is being hampered by knee pain as he is recovering from knee
surgery two months ago.
Woods shot a 3-over 73 on the final round. Mediate shot even-par
for a final round 71. Both finished 1-under par for their 72 holes. The playoff is scheduled to start at noon Eastern time on Monday.
