Jackets Knock Off Sand Gnats

Savannah, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets (33-23) held on to beat the Savannah Sand Gnats (24-32) Sunday afternoon 7-6 to earn a series split of the four game series. Garrett Baker and Jackson Williams each drove in two runs while Dan Turpen picked up the win in relief.

There were four different lead changes in the game with Augusta taking the final lead of the game in the seventh inning. With Savannah leading 5-4, Augusta plated three runs for a 7-5 lead. Shane Jordan had an RBI sac-fly to tie the game then Nick Noonan followed with an RBI double for a 6-5 lead. Baker came up next and connected for an RBI single to put Augusta up 7-5 and the hit proved to be the game winner.

Turpen (3-2) worked 2.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit. The right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out one. Daniel Otero retired the final five batters in a row for Savannah to record his 14th save of the season.

Savannah got one run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Richard Pena scored on a play that featured three errors from Augusta. Angel Villalona was charged with an error missing the throw from Noonan at second. Williams backed up the play and threw wide to second then allowing Pena to go to third then Jordan’s throw from center-field was wide of third allowing Pena to score.

Savannah took the first lead of the game in the third inning on a two-out RBI single from Casey Craig for a 1-0 lead Augusta rallied back in the fourth inning plating three runs for a 3-1 lead. Thomas Neal scored the first run when Andrew Davis hit a ball to third that Joaquin Rodriguez couldn’t handle. Williams followed with a two-run double. The GreenJackets added a single run in the fifth inning for a 4-1 advantage on the RBI sac-fly from Baker.

The Sand Gnats rallied with two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double from Greg Veloz then took the lead 5-4 in the sixth inning plating two more runs on the two-run single from Michael Parker.

Augusta starter Craig Clark allowed three runs on six hits over four innings of work. Clark walked two and struck out four in the no-decision.
