'Jackets open homestand with win

Augusta, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets (26-19) began an eight game home stand on Tuesday night when they welcomed to town the Savannah Sand Gnats (18-27) for the first of a four game series and came away with a 5-3 win in a rain shortened game. Craig Clark recorded the win and Angel Villalona sparked the offense with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Lightning forced the umpires to pull the players off the field in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and one on as the game was put into a delay at 9:11 p.m. Garrett Baker singled with two outs and with Villalona walking to the plate the players were pulled off the field.

The GreenJackets led 1-0 heading into the sixth inning but plated four runs to take a 5-0 lead. Villanoa got the scoring started in the half inning with a one-out, two-run homer after Baker singled. Andrew Davis and Matt Klimas followed with back-to-back doubles for a 4-0 lead. Ramon Corona capped off the scoring with a two-out RBI single.

Clark (3-0) worked 6.2 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits. The lefty did not walk a batter and struck out eight.

The Sand Gnats broke the shutout in the top of the seventh with three runs scored off of Clark. Jose Jimenez connected for a two-run single then scored two batters later on a fielding error from Corona at second base.

Joe Paterson recorded his first save of the season working a third of a scoreless inning.

Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Shane Jordan scored from second base after Francisco Peguero singled then Savannah third baseman threw the ball wide of first allowing Jordan to come in to score.

The GreenJackets and Sand Gnats continue their series Wednesday night with Augusta sending right-hander Daryl Maday (2-3, 2.14) to the mound. Savannah counters with lefty Mike Antonini (3-1, 2.79). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

Augusta improved to 26-19, matching the season high water mark for seven games over .500

Clark worked a career high 6.2 innings.

Augusta is 11-12 at home.

Villalona is tied for the team lead in home runs with six.
