NORTH AUGUSTA, SC---It took a few minutes for the folks at Fox Creek High to get everyone in place for today's athletic scholarship signing ceremony, but that's understandable, they'd never done it before. And with one stroke of a pen, Senior Brittany Gobat, one of the best swimmers in South Carolina, not only became the first Predator athlete to earn a college scholarship, she went big, signing with division one Georgia Tech.
Gobat made history for the predators program this afternoon and it was obvious it was a big deal for everyone involved. There were enough pictures taken for everyone present to have their own souvenir of the moment. Gobat is certainly deserving of the attention.
She's a state champion swimmer and set a South Carolina record for the breast-stroke. She's also sporting a 4.3 GPA and plans to study...
get this, Biomedical Engineering and go to medical school.
As I said, for their frist ever scholarship signing, Fox Creek went big. It's just another step in maturation of a young but growing athletic program...
"I'm glad to be representing Fox Creek right now," Gobat said. " It's been a long way since I started swimming when I was 7 and I'm glad it's starting to pay off. I'm glad I get to do it from a school like Fox Creek."
Athletic Director Russell Schneider is a little surprised at the success of the sports teams at Fox Creek. "This is our second year in the high school league," said Schneider. " We won five regions last year, we're winning five right now. Brittany herself won a state championship in swimming and in the breatstroke, broke the state record last year. (The program) is jumping off quicker than we'd hoped."
Gobat says she will most likely swim the same events at Georgia Tech as she did at Fox Creek. The 100 and 200 yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.
