NEW YORK (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers have snared Oregon running
back Jonathan Stewart with the 13th selection in the NFL draft.

Stewart left Oregon a year early after carrying 280 times for 1,722 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007, ranking him first in the Pac-10 and fifth nationally in rushing yards. He also set an Oregon record for rushing yards, 2,481 all-purpose yards and 14 100-yard rushing games.

Stewart was a threat as a kick returner last year, bringing back 23 for a 26.7-yard average.

The 5-foot-10 Stewart put up solid numbers as a sophomore, gaining 981 on 183 carries while scoring 10 touchdowns. His 2006 was hampered by a sprained ankle and bruised ribs.

Stewart is an exceptionally strong runner with powerful legs and great balance. He recognizes holes and is very tough to bring down.
