COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's new basketball coach is already making promises.

Darrin Horn says he will waste no time in trying to improve South Carolina and that he intends to win the Southeastern Conference. He'll have his work cut out for him.

The Gamecocks finished the season 14-18, has made the NCAA tournament just once this decade and won its only regular season SEC title in 1997.

Horn already has three recruiting appointments inside South Carolina on Wednesday. That's when he officially takes over for Dave Odom.

The 35-year-old Horn could make more than $1.3 million a year at South Carolina, a substantial raise from the $157,000 a year he made at Western Kentucky. His five-year contract includes incentives for winning that could be worth up to an additional $335,000 per year. He also will be paid $50,000 for every 1,000 additional season tickets sold over this season's total of 9,322 tickets.

Horn will be paid $800,000 annually.
