AUGUSTA, Ga---The nets are gone at Christenberry Fieldhouse and in the hands of the home team. The Augusta State men advance to the Division II Elite Eight in Springfield, Massachusetts with an 89-72 win against Clayton State in the South Atlantic Regional final Tuesday night.
The Jaguars used a rally at the end of the first half that cintinued on into the second half to take control on their home court. ASU was led by senior AJ Bowman with 27 points, 18 coming in the second half. Bowman was also named the regional's most outstanding player. Sophomore Ben Madgen and Junior Garrett Siler join Bowman on the all-tournament team. Madgen was second on the team in scoring Tuesday night with 24 points, including 16 in the first half.
"I can't explain it, if i wasn't on TV right now I might cry. It was so good to do it in my last home game, in this gym and give everybody something to remember." said All American AJ Bowman
"It was just like we knew we had to come out and play" said Junior Garret Siler. " We played against Clayton four times and we just knew how they play and we just had to come out there and man up and play some defense and we did."
"Oh it's amazing!" said Sophomore Ben Madgen. "Words can't describe how happy we are. We worked so hard for it and it finally paid off."
"A lot of hard work" added head coach Dip Metress "A lot of putting up with me because I ain't easy to put up with and some of these guys have put up with it for four years so its tough and they just hung in there. We started the year with such high expecations, people kind of lost faith in us but in the back of my mind I knew if we could get to this game, we were going to be in great shape."
The Jaguars now head to the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts for the Elite 8 next week. ASU will play Central Oklahoma next Wednesday at noon.
