PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) -- John Merrick capped a 6-under 64
with a 50-foot birdie putt on the final hole to take the lead after the first round of the Mayakoba Classic. Merrick opened the event with a 64 last year but faded to finish tied for 48th.
He enjoys a one-shot lead over Augusta native, Larry Mize and three others. John Daly is in a group at 66.
Course designer Greg Norman was in contention until he double bogeyed 16 and three-putted for bogey on 17. He's shot a 70.
