MARANA, Ariz. (AP) -- Add another accomplishment to Tiger Woods ever growing resume. The world's top golfer mounted a stunning comeback to beat J.B. Holmes 1-up at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Woods was three holes down with five to play, but proceeded to win the next four holes and clinched the win when Holmes missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
Augusta native Charles Howell III was two down with two to play to Stephen Ames but two stunning approach shots on 17 and 18 helped him square the match. Howell won it with a birdie on the 19th hole. He will face Colin Montgomerie in round 2 on Thursday.
Phil Mickelson topped Pat Perez 2-and-1 but Ernie Els was outclassed by Jonathan Byrd 6-and-5.
Other results included Colin Montgomerie beating Jim Furyk 3 and 2, Bradley Dredge ousting Rory Sabatini 4-and-3 and Rod Pampling topping Justin Rose 2-and-1.
