AUGUSTA---Finally, the first regional rankings of the season are out. The only rankings that have a direct impact on the postseason NCAA tournament.
In the South Atlantic region it has been a battle between Augusta State and USC Aiken for the top spot and the inside track on hosting the first three rounds of the NCAA's. There is still a long way to go in the season, but Augusta State's win against USC Aiken last week has propelled the Jags to number one in the region USC Aiken debuts at number two. Generally, the top eight teams in each region receive a bid to the NCAA tournament. Should USC Aiken take the top spot before the end fo the season, the Pacers will not be able to host the NCAA tournament. The Convocation Center is already booked that weekend with the Lipizzaner Stallions.
As for the women, Augusta State is seventh in the first region rankings with USC Aiken eighth.
