SAVANNAH, Ga. – Steve Smith’s free throw with 37 seconds left in overtime lifted Augusta State to an 83-82 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State in a Peach Belt Conference showdown in Alumni Arena.
On the ensuing possession, Smith slapped away Corey Johnson’s shot attempt underneath the basket with three seconds left. The Pirates retained possession, but Jamal Galloway’s 3-point attempt with the shot clock expiring was an air ball and after the turnover, ASU inbounded the ball and the game clock expired.
The victory improved the 22nd-ranked Jaguars to 9-3 overall and to 4-1 in the Peach Belt Conference The Pirates dropped to 9-3 and 3-2 in the league. The contest matched up the second and third-place teams in the PBC standings.
Augusta State’s Nicole Mealing scored a career-high 25 points off the bench Saturday to pace the Lady Jaguars to a 79-67 Peach Belt Conference road win over Armstrong Atlantic State in Alumni Arena.
With the win, the Lady Jaguars improved to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the PBC, while the Lady Pirates fell to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
A sophomore guard/forward from North Augusta, S.C., Mealing grabbed 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her career and tied a school record by connecting on 7-of-8 3-point attempts. Former Lady Jaguar sharpshooter Brandi Hollingsworth hit seven treys vs. Columbus State on Jan. 31, 2004. Mealing’s previous career-high for scoring was 17 during her freshman season, set on Dec. 29, 2006 in a home victory over Converse.
