Jaguars Upend CofC, 65-63

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Augusta State knocked off College of Charleston 65-63 Thursday night in an exhibition matchup before a crowd of 1,770 at John Kresse Arena.

ASU sophomore guard/forward Ben Madgen drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing with 7.3 seconds remaining for the winning basket. Madgen’s game-winner capped a 5-0 run over the final 52 seconds for the Jaguars, who are ranked No. 6 in the nation by three different publications.

Junior center Garret Siler led ASU with a game-high 24 points, while Madgen totaled 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Daniel Dixon added 13 points for the Jaguars, who return all five starters and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season’s 24-7 squad.

Tony White, Jr. scored 15 first-half points as the Cougars grabbed a 32-28 lead at intermission. White, Jr. capped a 6-2 Charleston run to start the second half that gave Charleston its largest lead at 38-30 with 18:23 left.

Charleston got 18 points from White, Jr., and a team-high 10 rebounds from Dustin Scott. Freshmen Andrew Goudelock and Antwaine Wiggins added 18 and 13 points each, respectively.

While not an official win, the victory marks the second win for ASU head coach Dip Metress over the Cougars in Charleston. While head coach at Belmont Abbey, Metress’ 2001-02 Crusader squad topped CofC 70-67, snapping its 22-game home winning streak which at the time ranked as the fifth-longest in the nation.

ASU will face Clemson in an exhibition matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum.
