AUGUSTA---After a second straight season of missing the postseason, you might expect the Atlanta Braves to have their collective fingers poised over the panic button. As a matter of fact, the team is poised to make another World Series run.
That's according to star rightfielder Jeff Francoeur and team president Jjohn Schuerholz, both of whom were in Augusta tonight to speak to the Greater Augusta Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Shuerholz, in particular, is enjoying this offseason, his first in twenty-six years as something other than a general manager. His focus remains making the Braves better and, just like Francoeur, he believes that means starting pitching.
"We're gonna work very hard this winer to rebuild the starting pitching staff," says Schuerholz. " We've got Smoltz, we've got Hudson and we add two guys to that, with the team that we have and I think we've got a real shot to win our division."
Jeff Francoeur adds, "John(Smoltz), Chipper and those guys are coming to their last 3 or 4 years and it'd be good to send them out on a World Series and take over from there."
Francoeur is also preparing for another big event this offseason. He's getting married to longtime girlfriend Katie McCoy in 9 days. The two first met in third grade.
