COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina has clarified its policy about special admissions -- including those affecting athletes -- releasing a set of reworked guidelines.

The issue came to light in August when head football coach Steve Spurrier angrily decried school policies that had him telling two prospects they would be admitted when their entrance was eventually
denied.

Spurrier said then that if things didn't change on admissions, he may have to go somewhere else. Spurrier said then that he "can't tell the young man that he's coming to school here," then not have him admitted.

University Provost Mark Becker says that the reworked guidelines codify academic requirements for special admits and give all coaches a better understanding which of their prospects might get in.
