BURKE CTY., Ga. – After a briefing this morning, officials from Southern Nuclear released an update on the status of Vogtle Unit 1.

According to the release, their investigation did not find an apparent equipment failure. As a precaution, they are replacing any component that may have caused the breaker to open in addition to the breaker that started the shutdown. Additional monitoring equipment is also being installed to help in identifying any potential issues with the performance. Once everything is in place, they will begin start-up activities to return Unit 1 to service.

Alyson Fuqua, spokesperson for Southern Nuclear said, "It is important that people understand that is this not a safety related issue. Southern Nuclear strongly believes that safety is the top priority. Plant Vogtle has always and will continue to be operated in a safe and secure manner."

The exact date the reactor will return to service is not being released at this time. Reactor 2 is running at 100 percent power.
