CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) -- The head of the Department of Energy's Carlsbad field office in southern New Mexico is transferring to South Carolina.

Dave Moody will lead the DOE's Office of Environmental Management at the Savannah River Site.

Moody became manager of the Carlsbad office in 2005. That office oversees the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, a federal repository that permanently buries nuclear waste in rooms mined out of an ancient salt formation 2,150 feet underground.

The waste, from federal sites around the country, consists of tools, rags, protective clothing, sludge, soil and other materials contaminated with radioactive elements.
