Inside Operation Thunder

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- On Feb. 14, 2013, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety launched a 90-day campaign to combat traffic fatalities.

Officers are targeting drivers under the influence, proper child restraints and seat belts, just to name a few, with a goal of reducing highway deaths and dangerous drivers in Augusta.

Deputies say Richmond County has seen a 131 percent increase in traffic fatalities within the past two years -- 19 fatalities in 2010, 35 in 2011 and 44 in 2012.

Checkpoints will be held throughout the three-month campaign, with alternating locations and schedules.

Here's a list of where the checkpoints have been held and how many citations were issued:

Feb. 14, 2013: 140 citations

  • 3400 block of Milledgeville Road
  • Old Savannah Road at Molly Pond Road

Feb. 15, 2013: 112 citations
  • Windsor Spring Road at Crosscreek Road
  • Calhoun Expressway at Eve Street
  • Skinner Mill Road at Dorchester Drive

Friday, March 1, 2013: 135 citations

Saturday, March 2, 2013: See map for statistics
  • Old Waynesboro Road at Brown Road
  • Tobacco Road
  • Gordon Highway at Holloway Drive

Saturday, March 9, 2013: No checkpoints, but law enforcement made stops.
  • Seat belt cases: 16
  • Child restraint: 1

  • Reckless driving: 1
  • Uninsuired motorists: 2
  • Suspended/revoked license: 4
  • Speeding: 29
  • Other violations: 14
  • All warnings: 52
  • Total UTC's/Warnings: 100
