AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- On Feb. 14, 2013, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety launched a 90-day campaign to combat traffic fatalities.
Officers are targeting drivers under the influence, proper child restraints and seat belts, just to name a few, with a goal of reducing highway deaths and dangerous drivers in Augusta.
Deputies say Richmond County has seen a 131 percent increase in traffic fatalities within the past two years -- 19 fatalities in 2010, 35 in 2011 and 44 in 2012.
Checkpoints will be held throughout the three-month campaign, with alternating locations and schedules.
