Smart Heart: Educating yourself about diabetes

Friday, November 12, 2010

AUGUSTA -- In this "Smart Heart" report, we're talking about diabetes.

We're teaming up with University Hospital to tell you about their Diabetes Expo planned for Saturday, November 13th from noon until 5 p.m.

It's being held at Warren Baptist Church at 3203 Washington Road at the intersection with Fury's Ferry Road.

Some of the symptoms of high blood sugar include:
- increased thirst
- increased urination
- blurry vision
- unusual fatigue.

But the symptoms are not always present in every patient. That's why doctors suggest regular checkups. And if you are diagnosed with diabetes, education is key.

"Diabetes education is very important, because if a person doesn't understand their disease they really won't be able to work with their healthcare team to control it and manage it," said Robin Petry, a Certified Diabetes Instructor at University.

At Saturday's Diabetes Expo, there will be exhibits with the latest diabetes services and products.

You'll even have the chance to go back to school, with classes taught by cardiologists and other diabetes specialists.
