Controlling your cholesterol

In today's "Smart Heart" report we continue our discussion about cholesterol.

Last week we told you what cholesterol is: a waxy substance that's carried by our blood.

Amber Morris, a certified physician assistant at University Hospital, says part of your lipid profile tells you your triglyceride level.

Triglyceride is another fatty substance found in the blood. Having a high level is a risk factor for heart disease.

Morris says the best way to lower your triglyceride is through lifestyle changes: eating low fat, low cholesterol foods, exercising 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week and managing your weight.

You may also need to talk to your doctor about medications.

"The total cholesterol goal is 200. If you have history of a heart attack or other risk factors for heart disease those numbers may be lowered and your health care provider can give you specific goals," she said.

Morris says your L.D.L, or bad cholesterol, should be 130. Your H.D.L, or good cholesterol, should be 40 or higher.
