Smart Heart: Sleep and your Heart

March 12, 2010

AUGUSTA -- We're teaming up with University Hospital to look at how important sleep is for your heart.

Studies show sleep apnea, or problems breathing when you sleep, can lead to a higher risk of heart disease.

Doctor Bashir Chaudhary with University Hospital says about 1/3 of those with hyptertension -- also have sleep apnea.

Hyptertension is one of the leading causes of heart disease.

Doctor Chaudhary said he has seen people during sleep studies that stop breathing more than 100 times an hour. That causes a hormonal imbalance that keeps your blood pressure from returning to normal.
