Heart disease is leading killer

Health Team 12 and our Heart Matters partners at University Hospital - Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans, and alarming new statistics show that it's affecting African Americans at a younger age. African Americans in their 30s and 40s are suffering from heart disease at the same rate it as Caucasians in their 50s and 60s.
"When we say essential hypertension we're saying that the person has hypertension but we can not identify any secondary causes that can be adequately treated or irradicated, in which case you do that the hypertension goes away," says Dr. Michael Holman, cardiologist at University Hospital.
Doctors say the study is important because most people associate heart disease with older adults. University recently unveiled their Heart and Vascular Institute that offers rehab for heart patients.
