Heart Matters: Hypertension

March 13, 2009

Health Team 12 and our Heart Matters partners at University Hospital - a lot of people suffer from hypertension. It is also one of the onsets before an actual heart attack. There are medicines to help treat it, but you could avoid those with lifestyle changes. Those changes could mean a ten or twenty point difference in your blood pressure.

Victoria Burt, nurse practitioner in Cardiovascular Rehab Services tells us, "With the blood pressure there’s actually three components, one being the pump, which is the heart; made nice and strong with exercise as well as avoiding things that can weaken the heart, like alcohol. Healthy when your body has the correct amount of vitamins and minerals."

Physicians recommend diets with a lot of grains, fruits, vegetables and food low in sodium, fats and cholesterol for hypertension patients.
