NEW YORK (AP) — On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, family members of those who died have been able to mourn their loss at new memorials in New York and Pennsylvania.
At the spot where the World Trade Center stood, weeping relatives of the victims placed pictures and flowers beside names etched in bronze, on a wall surrounding giant pools with waterfalls. President Barack Obama and his predecessor, George W. Bush, bowed their heads and touched the inscriptions.
The family members read the names of the nearly 3,000 who died, and offered personal memories and tributes to them.
In Shanksville, Pa., at the first phase of the Flight 93 National Memorial, a crowd of 5,000 listened to a reading of the names of 40 passengers and crew killed aboard the fourth jetliner hijacked a decade ago. Obama and his wife traveled to the Pennsylvania town after their visit to New York and placed a wreath at the memorial.
At the Pentagon, Vice president Joe Biden paid tribute to what he called the "9/11 generation" of American service members. And he said of the terror attacks, "Hope can grow from tragedy."
