News 12's Stephanie Baker sent the following questions to Richmond County Interim Superintendent James Thompson.


1. How many metal detectors does the school system have?

There are 18 walk thru metal detectors and approximately 60 hand
held devices.

2. How many public safety officers does the school system have?

There are currently 38 Public Safety Officers.

3. How much money does it cost the system to employ each officer?

It cost approximately $65,249.32 to include a vehicle, weapon, radio, body armor, uniforms, salary and benefits.

4. What is the cost of each metal detector?

The cost is $4,995.00

5. What is the total amount you spend on school security?

The total cost spent as of 4-25-07 is $1,471,076 (this cost includes salary and benefits).

6. Local lawmakers are working with Governor Sonny Perdue on the supplemental budget. Will the school system request any of that money for additional security? If so, how much?

7. What does the policy say about metal detector procedures? How should officers respond when they are activated? How should they respond when they believe a student has a weapon?

They are trained to respond according to the situation at hand.

8. What is your policy on securing doors around campus?

The main entrance is accessible at all times for registered visitors. All other doors are to be keep secured at all times.

9. Are there any plans in place to tighten security in light of Melquan Robinson's expulsion?

We will continue to perform random searches and respond to any suspicious information or situation regarding the safety of the children and staff.

10. Will additional funding in the state's budget help you tighten security?
