I
can be unknown cause I didn't steal the tax money. Matter of fact
Peterson was unknown until the audit uncovered what he did. We already
know that he is heartless and cold hearted maybe that's why he has no
children! They need love and compassion and since he has none he
shouldn't be blessed with the responsibility that's why he shouldn't be
over our children. Peterson didn't have to step out so no one else has
to. Fellow persons contiune to express your thoughts cause it matters.
If the board won't fire him we together can make his name a shame to
mention. These e-mail's are read by the world, lets let people
everywhere aware of what we have here in our county so that no one else
will make the same horrible mistake that we did.

Posted by: concerned - Thomson 10:28 AM Mar 21, 2007

Thanks
to the x board member she knows who she is that voted to extend
Peterson's contract. You should hang your head in shame cause if it
wasn't for you he would be gone. People don't blame the new members
give them a chance to settle things, but instead direct your anger
toward the board members who brought this man to our town. One of them
I know supported Peterson, now she is gone and he is still here! But I
guess it is true God has a plan! Don't you get it, if he had left to
early we would have never found out about what he did. Thank you board
member for giving he the seat, but I bet you didn't know that the seat
was going to turn hot.

It
is unfortunate that McDuffie County has to endure this fiasco. The BOE
hired Dr. Peterson from a pool that contained more qualified and more
experienced educators. Dr. Peterson is employed at the pleasure of the
Board. His contract can be revoked for several reasons, two of those
reasons being "incompetence" & "unethical behavior". It appears
that both of these apply.
A superintendent's behavior should be beyond reproach and all employees
should be treated equally and without bias. If these problems are from
a prior year, imagine how bad the next year will be.
I can only trust that the Board has enough foresight to terminate
Peterson's contract now and stop the embarrassment to this county.

What
have the school system test scores been under Dr. Peterson?..... They
have DECLINED. Our scores are going down, our school leadership is
sinking and our school leader steals.

Posted by: Citizen - Thomson 10:30 AM Mar 21, 2007

Just look at the facts.

Did the Superintendent spend money that was not his without permission?

Are the schools making AYP?

Does the community as a whole support him and the direction he is leading the school system?

Posted by: Scared - Thomson 10:30 AM Mar 21, 2007

Employees
are scared we will lose our jobs if we speak up. We need to eat, pay
bills, and support our families. Will the Board of Education please
help us!

Posted by: disheartened - Thomson 10:32 AM Mar 21, 2007

I
am not surprised that Dr. Petersen did the things he did. He is
deceitful and has a way of manipulating any situation. It is obvious
that if he does not approve of you, then he has his ways of making you
miserable (as you can see very few people will leave their name for
fear of manipulative ways). So as far as he goes I am not surprised.
What does surprise me is our board members, (Thanks to the ONE member
who does stands up for our children's education by questioning his
proposals). I am disappointed with the fact that they saw what he was
doing and they allowed him to get away with it. The comment made by one
of the members stating that "We got our hand caught in the cookie jar"
just proves how lightly board members are taking this situation, with
the exception of ONE member. Money is unaccounted for and yet they
continue to allow him to manipulate and scheme new ideas, such as the
$84,000 propsal to purchase a pontoon boat and a boat dock...I am so
concerned that by the time our board members open their eyes, our
county will no longer be the home town we all love, thanks to Dr.
Petersen and his board, with the exception of ONE member.

Posted by: Concerned - Thomson 10:33 AM Mar 21, 2007

I
have continually read the citizens of McDuffie County urge the board to
stand up and correct this problem. My question is, "Are the board
members even reading the comments written here?" We, the concerned
citizens of McDuffie County who have been silenced by threats to our
family and friends employed by the BOE need to stand up. We need to
show up at the next board meeting, and every one after that and be
heard. We need to be heard over and over again until this man and his
little Hitlers are gone. We want the best for our county, our schools,
and our children. I realize that BOE employees are still at risk, but
all of us who are not, ought to be heard. If we are not heard, then our
board needs to be replaced. Ultimately, the right to free speech and
the right to vote are the only tools we have to change the situation.

Posted by: Wondering - Thomson 10:35 AM Mar 21, 2007

Laurie
Ott, if you are interested, follow up by reading the article in the
Thomson Times regarding the proposed building of a boat dock ,boat
ramp, boat house, and the purchase of a pontoon boat with school board
funds. When questioned a bout this, the reasoning behind it is to take
the special needs children for a boat ride, and for the students to be
able to observe flora and fauna. If my elemertary school science
vocabulary doesn't fail me, flora is flowers, and fauna is animals, Can
one truly expect to observe them from a pontoon boat on the water. Get
real.

Is it possible that the $49,000 went to pay for new coachs?
Posted by: Laughing in Richmond County - Augusta 10:38 AM Mar 21, 2007

Ya'll
have got it going on in McDuffie. Desperate
housewife/principal/antebellum "Annie" marries her sweetheart who is
someone else's husband! The Young and the Restless ain't this good. And
Dr. Petersen! I know ole' Uncle Tom Dr. Franklin is laughing on the
inside and his master saying, "ya'll should have picked me for
superintendent instead of Jed Clampont and his sidekick Martha Stewart!
Keep up the good work Mark!

This
stuff doesn't sound remotely similar to what I read in the McDuffie
Mirror three weeks ago, a week before this story was posted. At least
they got the details from everybody involved and explained it at
length. Even the state auditor's comments in that story made it sound
like it wasn't that big of a deal. Why all the overraction?

Posted by: Curious - Thomson 11:42 AM Mar 21, 2007

I
am glad someone finally mentioned the out of control principals that
Dr. Peterson allows to run rampant in the school systems. If Laurie Ott
wants to investigate, have her interview a teacher who transferred to
Euchee Creek Elemtary School last year because of maltreatment by one
of the favored principals. I met this girl at a Mary Kay party a friend
was giving. She did not know me, or that I was related to BOE
employees. When I questioned her about her job, she openly told me how
her job was ended because she had a premature baby and could not return
to work in what this man thought was a reasonable time frame. She stood
up to him and eventually a job was created at another school for her,
but the ugliness was to great for her to continue in our school system.
From what she told me, I feel that this was a direct violation of the
American Family Leave Act. The issue was somewhat resolved, but she
moved on, and Dr. Peterson and his goons were able once again to
tighten the noose around the other employees of the BOE. At this point,
I cannot sign my name openly because I have too many friends and family
members who work for the school system, and until these people are
gone, their jobs are in jeopardy.

Posted by: Concerned Parent - Thomson 12:13 PM Mar 21, 2007

McDuffie
County is a great place to live and raise you're children and we should
be proud but we also have to look out for our childrens best interest
in our school system. I think that the issue brought up recently about
the audit should be looked into further and the new financial request
brought before the BOE in reference to a pontoon boat is ridiculous!
Our teachers have to worry about how many copies they make or having
enough text books for each child and they are always commenting on the
cut-backs our school systems are receiving but yet our Superintendent
and other board members would ask for funds that are totally
unnecessary. As far as the Renaissance program I fully support it when
it is used in a positive manner. When students try their best in school
and make goods grades and look forward to the Renaissance parties but
then find out they can't participate because of a "Renaissance
Attendance Policy" that is ridiculous and bumps them from participating
if they have three or more excused or unexcused tardies/early releases
or all day absences. It is disheartning to the children and when you
confront the Administrators about these issues they always put it off
on someone else. Yes, I have researched this issue and I am not
referring to ecessive absences/tardies/early releases, I am referring
to numerous students that had between three and five that were
"excused" Dr.s appointments and they were still "penalized" and not all
of the schools have the same Renaissance requirements. School is not
about the children anymore it is all about funding. The individuals
that are in the school systems to get higher positions and big titles
and are not in it for the children and could care less need to find
other jobs in big corporations and leave our children to the ones that
do care.

Out
of all my years in education, I have never heard so many negative
comments about one man. I have never seen a superintendent come in and
make so many changes. Some of the changes were good, such as the dress
code at the high school, but other changes were quite uncalled for. You
can't fix something that's isn't broken. Rumors will always be spread,
but the truth stands alone. When I was a principal, teahcers were
allowed to give feedback and evaluate the principal and superintendent.
What happened? Did this process get swallowed up by the "dark cloud"
that everyone is talking about. Do our teachers and board members no
longer have a voice? Dr. Peterson may have good intentions, but I can
never defend stealing. $5 or 500,0000, stealing is wrong. The newspaper
did a great of sugar-coating everything and leaving things out. Read
the audit for yourself!! I totally agree with Mrs. Knox. It's time for
the board members, community, and teachers and staff to stand up!
Show up at the board meeting. All board meeting should be publicly
posted and listed on the McDuffie county website. No more secret
meetings, let's get everything out in the open so everyone can see and
hear the truth. If this is not done, then our system will continue to
go down and the issues at hand will continue to go unaddresed.
Thomson, STAND UP! BEFORE YOU LET THE EDUCATION SYSTEM FALL. We have
worked too hard to see our children suffer.

I
think that enough mud slinging has been done to
embarrass not only Dr. Peterson but the whole community. It is time for
these comments to end and the board to get the job they were elected to
do done. As you can tell by the laughing in Richmond County comment
everyone is enjoying the
gossip and mud slinging. We have forgotten the
most important issue here which is the education of McDuffie County
children. I think that it is disgusting that people enjoy reading and
writing
comments that include nasty name calling. These
people need to grow up and worry about their school system.

The
Revolution is not be televised, but it is on the Internet. Board
Members, community, teachers and staff, WAKE UP! Speech your opinion
and let your voice be heard. Go to the schools, go to the board
meetings. Let the truth be known. If the board members don't act
accordingly, then someone else must stand up! There will be a change
and it needs to start today. All board meetings should be public. No
more secret meetings. Just in case you didn't know it, that's illegal.
It's called a breach of public policy. When you break this, it's a
federal crime. Do the right thing. Listen to the citizens and look at
the facts. There's no need to spread rumors. Take action, make it swift
and just. The reason why we vote is to have representation. Bord
members, Who are you representing? Peterson may have hand-picked you,
but he didn't vote you in. When you act like sheep you get eaten by
wolves. Stand up like men and women and deal with the issues. Don't
continue to let McDuffie County be disgraced. $50,000 misplaced or
unaccounted for. Let's get real. Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong. How
long is this going to last? Forget about what people are saying. Did
you read the Audit? It speaks for itself, the truth always does. STAND
UP!

For
all who are interested in attending the next BOE meeting, it is to be
held on April 12 at 6 pm at the BOE building. If you want to speak at
the meeting, you will need to contact the superintendant's secretary at
let her know in advance. There also will be a planning meeting that
morning at 8:30 am at the BOE building. FYI also, I have talked with
some of the board memebers, and they are aware of what is being said
here, but they still seem to be in denial that there is anything wrong
with what Dr Peterson has done, or is still doing. We need to let our
voices be heard.

You
know, It's a sad situation when you have block this website (WRDW.COM)

Posted by: Educator - Thomson 5:00 PM Mar 21, 2007

I
find it interesting that as an educator I teach my students about good
citizenship and freedom of speech. And yet when a man in a position of
power steals from the school system he is not punished. Does this mean
that I should teach my students that it is okay for the powerful to
steal? That the law only applies to the poor and powerless? It is also
interesting that once WRDW posted negative comments about the McDuffie
County Superintendent on their website it was suddendly blocked and
couldn't be accessed from any computers within the McDuffie County
schools. This website has never been blocked before, why now? We
weren't prevented from having access to the news when Dr. Charles Lark
was being investigated. Doesn't it make sense that the teachers and
students who are being affected by this story be allowed to read it?
Sure Dr. Peterson is visible in the schools, particularly those where
his favorites are employed. Personally I would prefer to have a
superintendent who is honest and trustworthy rather than one who visits
schools for breakfast and pep rallys. After all don't actions speak
louder than words? If we are going to teach our children how to be good
and honest people, then we need good and honest leaders. Oh and by the
way, "staffulty" is NOT a word. I am a Teacher!

Posted by: Taxpayer - Thomson 5:00 PM Mar 21, 2007

How
could a man trained to be a superintendent of schools be unaware that
spending taxpayers money on his wife is wrong? I'm sure something like
that had to be covered in the classes he took to get his doctorate
degree! He just assumed he would get by with it.

Posted by: County Tax Payer - McDuffie 5:01 PM Mar 21, 2007

Laurie
Ott, did you know that now Peterson has BLOCKED your WEBSITE from the
McDuffie County School System computers? Just to keep people from
reading these, but I guess he's not smart enough to know you can go
home and pull it up. This is just another way he dicates the school
system. Also, for you folks that don't like seeing and hearing the
truth about Mcuffie County School System, all you have to do is STOP
READING IT! or ban it like Peterson. But maybe you are on his kiss butt
team, or on the 'do this for me and I'll look out for you', team. HA! I
love McDuffie County, too, and think we do have a great school system,
but it's fixing to be on the road to downfall. It's not just the money
he has taken, but the way employees are treated, ugly and unfairly. But
again, if you don't like it, don't read it, and keep turning the blind
eye and eat crow later. For two of you BOE members, stop backing him
and take a stand for what is right, like you promised to do in order to
get elected, or did you just lie? But you may be getting kick backs,
too, (And I'm not talking about money) that would explain why you never
go against him. You all must think people of McDuffie County are dumb,
but we're not.

The
negative comments posted on this site are extremely disturbing to me.
We have some mean spirited educators in our county. People who throw
rocks and hide their hands are suppose to be teaching my children to
have good morals. If you truly have the courage of your convictions,
acknowledge who you are when you choose to degrade someone. Why can’t
the comments be limited to the audit findings? Taking cheap shots at
the poor man’s wife and other school system employees who don’t have a
thing to do with the audit is just evil. I could care less who the
principal at my child’s school has divorced or is currently married to.
I just care about my child’s ability to get a good education. After
all, shouldn’t our focus really be about educating the students?

We
need to contact the NAACP and all other organizations to find out why
Peterson is getting away with what he did! He has shredded many

I
have worked in a number of schools in my lifetime, but I have never
witnessed such an abrupt disintegration of morale as I have seen in the
McDuffie County Schools since the arrival of Dr. Mark Petersen. I,
along with many other professional educators, really made an effort
when he first came to our district to give him a chance to lead us to a
higher level of service to our children. When Dr. Petersen first came,
he was touting a book called Good to Great, and promised our schools
that that title would be an adjective of our future progress.
Unfortunately, a more accurate description of our situation under
Petersen’s leadership—or lack thereof—might be Good to Grim! Shortly
after his arrival, teachers received a notice in their mail boxes that
warned of disciplinary action if they were found to have spoken to
Board of Education members about school concerns. Then Board President,
Mr. Tommy Phelps, put a swift halt to that First Amendment breech as
soon as he was informed of Petersen’s audacity. Petersen then set out
to quash all opposition to his regime. We have watched him banish
capable and caring educators and leaders, one after another, to back
closets and neighboring counties. The brain drain from our professional
ranks is appalling. Teachers really do feel intimidated and
debased—staffulty, indeed! How demoralizing to individuals who have
distinguished themselves in the pursuit and conveyance of education,
and who spend untold unpaid hours in the trenches with the struggling
student who so desperately needs that extra push. His Hitleresque
suppression of dissenting information on the WRDW.com web site is just
one more notch on his Billy stick. Petersen needs to go, not only
because he is despicable and dishonest, but also because he lacks the
credentials of character to stand shoulder to shoulder with the
students, parents, citizens, and educators of McDuffie County. Equally
disgusting is the flagrant waste of money that Petersen has expended on
such white elephants as tacky name badges, wild free-for-alls that go
by the name of Renaissance parties, and last but certainly not least
among the squandering, the artificial flowers, fake fireplaces, and
plastic bulldogs with which he allows his tasteless wife to deface our
professional educational headquarters. This despite the fact that we
are told daily that there is no funding for countless items. Enough,
already! School personnel are not whispering about this. They are
openly discussing it and trying to come up with some way to be heard.
So far, our pleas have gone unheeded. Isn’t that sad? I will get up
tomorrow morning and go to school. I will teach my students, and love
them. I will listen to their stories and their problems. I will wave to
them as they leave to go home. I will come home tomorrow knowing that I
made a difference for the better in a child’s life. Pity you can’t say
the same, Dr. Petersen. You just pinch their money.

Awww,
shucks. When the tornado came through and hit the B.O.E. it ruined Mrs.

website is now blocked from all McDuffie County School computers. Too
late...secret is out.

If
Dr. Petersen did block this site from the county website, then I say as
a concerned parent "way to go Dr. Petersen." From what I have read it
appearesd that many disgruntled educators were using school time to
vent on this web site. Maybe if they did their jobs they would not feel
the need to gripe and waste time writing vile comments on this web site
when they should be educating our children or planning how they are
going to teach our children during "their planning time" Talk about
wasting the tax payers money. Have some faith in your elected board,
you put them there and if the state says the money is all accounted
for....... We have a judge we don't need the vindictive disgruntled
judging. I will continue to pray for the people who feel the need to
repeat vicious gossip. Remember God will judge us ALL!

I
can not believe that some of these comments are
coming from teachers that we trust our children with all day. The name
calling, the uncalled for
remarks about Mrs. Peterson's decorating taste. Ex: (tasteless

website. Where are your morals? Do you teach your students
that if someone angers them then you call them names and make fun of
their family's taste. Everyone needs to remember their own morals and
values and use good taste when making a comment especially people whose
job it is to set examples
for our children.

Not
all of us are disgruntled teachers. I have been silently reading this
for a while. In response to the former concerned parent. I am truly
afraid of what my grandchild will have to endure when in the school
systgem. I do know that my daughter who is a teacher does not have an
official planning period, and has to eat lunch in her vehicle while
traveling from school to school. She has discussed this with her
superiors and they say there is no way for her schedule to meet the
needs of the students in the county and give her these teacher
comforts. There is no support in the upper levelos of administration
because they too are afraid to speak up. They are afraid of bveing
pusched out of their jobs by this man.

I
read the follow up news story and the audit. Come on. The zudit report
was only the cover page. Somewhere in this mass of numbers is an
explanation of how this money was actually spent. This is the biggest
cover up scheme I have ever seen.

First of all, you don't know for sure that "all" of these comments have come from Teachers. We teach because we WANT to. Don't you know that we are smart enough NOT to visit this web address at school. Please---We are all aware that our computers are watched VERY CLOSELY at the board office!(One more way to impose that silent iron-hand.) So rest assured we are not wasting precious time at school for such nonsense. Unfortunately, we don't have enough time to do the teaching we are so passsionalte about, because of AYP, testing, etc. Second of all, you try going to work everyday wondering if you are being targeted, watching fellow educators that are being targeted. Fear of being fired is bad; fear of being targeted is tenfold! On top of this fear, we still close our doors and try to reach all the needs of our students, academic, social, and emotional, pay our bills, rear our own children, and make a differnce in our community. It all sounds so out of this world ---but it is not. The trash talk is sad, but comes from countless minutes, hours, days, years of having to sit silently by and watch our beliefs, dreams for our students, and lots of hard work be swept under a mat. Lack of respect for us as individuals and educators has resulted in terribly low teacher morale and research shows this does directly affect the educational success of our students. So, walk a mile in our shoes! I don't understand why system employess have had to read about all of this (audit and the boat) in the paper. I would have had more repect for Dr. Peterson had he come to us as a faculty and been upfront with us. Dr. Peterson, what is the Rennaissance Solution? How do we regroup and move on from here? We need a plan, don't keep us in the dark any longer. "From Good to Grim" is where we are and it is not good enough for McDuffie County-Spring is the time for new life, no better time than the present.
Please pray for our administrators, teachers, staff, and our students.
