COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson University is seeking $5 million in the coming year to begin hiring 86 faculty members.
University president James Barker asked a House budget-writing panel Wednesday for $12 million in additional money. That includes $5 million for the first phase of a five-year hiring plan, as the university continues its new mantra of divesting to invest.
Barker says the university has eliminated 550 positions over the last three years through buy-out offers and normal attrition. He says there were no layoffs.
Barker says the 86 new positions will boost the university's four focus areas: health, energy, environmental sustainability and transportation.
Barker also asked for $46 million in one-time money for building programs, mostly to renovate two of the campuses' oldest buildings and other maintenance needs.
