Atlanta to repay $363K for cheating

ATLANTA (AP) -- State officials say Atlanta Public Schools has agreed to repay more than $363,000 in federal money won because of cheating on student tests.
State schools Superintendent John Barge told The Associated Press on Friday the district has 90 days to pay the money. He said, in exchange, the state is placing five specialists in the 50,000-student district and providing training for educators until at least June.
A state investigation in July revealed widespread cheating by educators in nearly half of the district's 100 schools dating back to 2001. In all, nearly 180 teachers and principals were accused of giving answers to students or changing answers once the tests had been completed by students.
A spokesman for the district said officials would comment later in the day.
