GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- With a 74 percent increase in the number of homeless students over the total in 2004, South Carolina educators are doing what they can to battle the problems.

The Greenville News reported Sunday that the latest numbers from the state Department of Education show a 74 percent increase in the number of students identified as homeless since 2004. That translates to a total of 8,744 during the 2008-09 school year.

In Greenville County, the total number of students who have no place to live has reached 703 as of September.

Brenda Myers, state coordinator for the McKinney-Vento Education Program, said many districts quietly help parents find shelter and provide basic necessities such as clothing and school supplies without reporting the students as homeless.
