AUGUSTA, Ga. --- News 12 has confirmed Savannah River College will shut down on Tuesday, but the reasons are still unclear.
Last August the school was short federal dollars and the Department of Education conducted an open program review of the college. News 12 has learned that classes will cease...and the administrators are being tight lipped. However, one former student isn't.
Savannah River College has been a fixture in Augusta for over 25 years. The junior college, with close to 200 students, is no longer taking in new applicants.
LaBarron Jackson says he's not surprised the school is closing. He also says he's not upset about the news. He was a student back in 2008 and says he experienced a lot of problems with the school - among them getting his transcripts.
"When i tried to go back to get my transcripts they said they didn't I got all kinds of run around about getting it,"says Jackson. "There were a lot of things that they were doing that wasn't right."
Late last summer News 12 learned the Department of Education conducted an open program review of the college. On Monday the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools or (ACICS) told us that the following guidelines are in place:
"Savannah River College per their accreditation is to provide for the student's completion of their education, or the alternative is to provide a full refund to the students. Students should call SRC to make arrangements."
Jackson says he has tried - on numerous occasions to contact the school for his transcripts but he keeps getting road blocks.
"I still don't have it, they say I owe a balance for classes I never even took.I've called there and was trying to speak with Mr. Kerr and they had me on hold for almost 45 minutes."
There will be a follow-up conversation between the school and regulatory agency to find out what the school has done to fulfill that requirement. Since 1981- the college has offered business, information technology and allied health programs.
