AUGUSTA, Ga. -- News 12 has confirmed Richmond County deputies are investigating the former band director at Augusta's George P. Butler Comprehensive High School.

That comes after the mother of a teenage girl accused Anthony Shelton of having sex with her daughter. "She was having sex six, seven to eight times a week with her band teacher," says the mother. News 12 is hiding her identity to protect her 16-year-old daughter.

Shelton resigned the band director's job in March.

Sexual Crimes Investigator Thelma Gilchrist told News 12 Friday, school police asked deputies with help with the investigation Thursday.

Richmond County School Superintendent Dr. Dana Beddon scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon to discuss the situation. "Singular incidents like this tarnish the whole profession."

Dr. Walter Reeves is the principal at Butler High School and the person who hired Anthony Shelton last June. "I hired him because he had good references and did a good job with his interview."

And, during his short time at Butler, Dr. Reeves says he was pleased with Shelton. "He was a good band director, did a good job with the band."

But then in February of 2008, allegations of inappropriate behavior surfaced by two students and Shelton later resigned. But, the school board says the latest allegations are the most shocking, allegations that the pair had a four month sexual relationship inside the band room.

The 16-year-old says she was pulled out of class to have sex with Shelton; she even outlines where he kept the condoms.

"I would hate to just speculate and jump off the list because we don't know if it's true or not yet, but who knows," says Dr. Bedden.

Gardner to Dr. Reeves, "Have any other students come forward to claim they were sexually abused by Mr. Shelton?"

Reeves answered, "No, I certainly don't take these allegations lightly, but at the same time, we can’t brand someone or falsely accuse them."

Still, the girl's mother says she is sure her daughter is telling the truth. "I want to see him punished to the fullest. I want to see justice done."

The Sheriff's Office says they cannot complete their investigation or file an arrest warrant against Shelton at this time if they wanted too, because the girl is not talking.

I dont like the way none of this is going.... The news is always getting Butler in the bad news. They never get the good news about what goes on in Butler. Its kind of funny how when we finally do good. Some little girl comes around and messes things up. I dislike how the media plays Butler as if it is a "bad" school it is not. We have the best Principal and had the best Band director ever. Slandering is against the law and I hope that little girl know it. Oh and we all know who she is, but she does lie alot. She cant be trusted!!!!!!! This hurts us alot and you all will never understand how hard we work to clean up our names and this year we did a good job at it but now you all are taking that way from us.

If you don't know her then you would be like why did she do it. I know these females and when something doesn't go their way they lie. We are now suffering because of this. You don't know how it feels when you can't trust anyone. I hope everything goes good for him. And thank you for understanding our point and seeing the good. Hint to the wise people lie to get themselves out of trouble because they do things they have no business doing in the first place they lie when they try to take advantage of someone and they don't give in and they lie just because they are the ones that need help. I wish the media would see the truth and the positive things. We would love for him to come back. Dr. Bedden you just really don't know how much this hurts us. You all really don't know. Be in our shoes for a day. We will fight for Shelton until the end. We came to far to be shut down now. And this is the best thing that has happened to Butler.

why do ya'll have to be like that you probably dont even know him well enough or even took the time to get to know him just because someone wants to pop up while he doing good and do all this and then it didnt look like they were going to perform at a strip club....dont be jealous and mad becasue someone else is doing good ....just at least be happy for him and his students and the school becasue before he came students had a bad reputation and everything and when he came there was actually someone for them to look up to...SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY BELIEVED IN THEM.....mr. shelton i thank for great work you have done and the good influence you were on the kids and now they stay out of trouble and know how to act like a real band famiily and you will always be apart of that family

It's just entertainment. Mr. Shelton is a very good teacher and he would never hurt anyone. He was more help than harm. We had creative freedom with the field shows. If you think the show was so bad how about you get a band together get some auxiliary members write out the music and create the field show. People have to be so negative when they see someone doing so good. Before you pass judgments you need to get the true story and know the facts. He is a real blessing to Butler High school. The thing he wanted the most was to see us graduate and go to college to make something of ourselves......Thank you Mr. Shelton for everything.

Yeah, he did an awesome job. He was just so great, he had the band out on the field looking like they were ready for some strip club. Get a grip and bands doing performances like that should not be allowed to perform at any other schools. IF you think he was so great you need to do some major reevaluating.
