ATLANTA (AP) -- Campaign fundraising reports show that Georgians are opening their wallets wider for Mitt Romney than they are for Newt Gingrich, who represented the state in Congress for more than two decades.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Federal Election Commission filings show Romney's presidential campaign raised more than $525,000 from Georgia donors in the last three months of 2011. Gingrich, who's become Romeny's chief rival for the Republican nomination, raised more than $350,000 from Georgians.

The campaign reports also show the former House speaker had more Georgia donors, who gave in smaller amounts. Gingrich had 1,000 individual Georgia contributors, compared to 559 for Romney.

A spokeswoman for Gingrich, Susan Meyers, says the numbers show Gingrich's campaign is appealing more to regular Georgians.
