ATLANTA (AP) -- A highway near Augusta would be renamed for a deputy sheriff killed in the line of duty under a resolution approved by House lawmakers.

The House voted unanimously Monday to rename a portion of Interstate Route 520 in Richmond County for Deputy James Paugh.

Police say he was shot to death in October by Tennessee Army National Guard soldier Christopher Hodges, who had been firing an assault rifle at vehicles on the highway. Authorities say the 47-year-old motorcycle officer was killed when he went to investigate a suspicious vehicle on the expressway.

Police said Hodges killed himself after shooting Paugh.

The resolution now heads to the state Senate.
