AUGUSTA,Ga---A tough economy has left hundreds of families struggling to make this a happy holiday. The CSRA Community Outreach Initiative says applications have more than doubled this year.

"We are gonna have some food," laughed Loreder Colbert. "Thank God."

Colbert was one of hundreds who lined up for help this Christmas.

"It's difficult times," said Colbert. "We just thank everyone at this facility for giving this gift of food."

There were mountains of boxes stuffed with food, clothes lined the walls, and toys and bicycles were huddled in corners.

"If we can help make one person smile," said CSRA Community Outreach Initiative organizer Deborah Burns. "That makes me feel good."

Deborah depends solely on donations from local organizations.

"I just call them up and they say uh oh this is Deborah calling," laughed Deborah. "I don't give them a chance to say no."

Program applications have doubled from 600 to 1200 in just one year.

"It has been a difficult year," said Augusta mayor Deke Copenhaver. "2010 is going to be much better."

"I think it speaks to the citizens of Augusta that people are stepping up to meet the needs of our community," said Copenhaver.

"All you have to do is just come over," noted Colbert. "They'll help see about you, but you first got to make an effort yourself."

Colbert is one of many who now can breathe a sigh of relief this holiday.

"We gonna have a little food to eat," said Colbert. "May not have much money, but that's not everything as long as we have each other."

The 4 hour event attracted more than 1,000 people. Still 300 more applicants are still waiting for help. You can bring donations and toys to the Carrie Mays Community Center until late Wednesday. You can give Deborah a call at 706-829-7127.
